I have not yet watched this show (curse you, slow torrents) but am confident nothing could possibly be better than Derpy Hooves unless Kate Beaton's fat pony joins the cast

Derpy is pretty great, you'll enjoy spotting all her cameos.

Anything else I should watch/listen for when I start watching? Given the TV habits in my house, it'll probably be in multi-episode marathon sessions...

How far has Twilight travelled sideways, honey? Was she granted her powers of fashion by the monolith from 2001? Is she basically an equine Kuranosuke? No she is not. Best pony is clearly (roll it!) Rrrrrrrarrrrrrity, daaaahling.

No Applejack love at all? Is it because of this?

Opinions of actual children: My daughter (4) never settles on any pony, but it would pretty much be Pinkie Pie or Rarity if you counted it up. My 8 year old neice picked Rainbow Dash and will have no talk of any other pony.
Oh, and 4 year old thinks Rainbow Dash is a boy - DAMN YOU OUTRAGED ONLINE GENDER THEORIST, YOU WERE RIGHT! She has yet to stop reading books though.

(Applejack probably gets the least love from Actual Child as well, FWIW)

Mr. F is aaaaallll about Twilight in a way others might find unnerving. (I think it's partially the Jean Grey/ Derp Phoenix thing.)
Me, it's a tossup between Derpy and Pinkie Pie. Derpy represents for my obvious visual impairment; it's like Oracle for the walleyed.

Presumably you've seen all the fanon for Derpy now: she's obsessed with muffins, is a postal worker, has a daughter named Dinky, etc.
