It's turned out that we can't get a TV service in our new flat at all unless we either get a satellite dish installed or buy some bunny ears, and as it turns out we're unbothered.
If BBC 4 Real (as it were) isn't worth getting then I can't see BBC With Adverts being any better!

What does the author mean, exactly, by A Good Man being "sped up" on BBCA?
Not literally, surely? Does she mean it was cut? It did feel slightly disjointed and choppy throughout to me, but I thought at least part of that was intentional.
(And commenters in the Metafilter posts have noted that the BBCA repeats are heavily cut for time. I hadn't noticed because I've watched all the new ones on first broadcast.)

I THINK she was referring to the cuts. I know that in one case, at least (the Doctor and his clone and the shoes from the first part of the flesh two-parter), they cut stuff out that was actually relevant to the plot, too.

The Doctor's shoes dissolving in the acid was in the first-showing BBCA broadcast; maybe it got cut from the repeats?
Speaking of repeats, it looks like the BBCA daily episode has looped back around to start from the beginning of Eccleston. Yay.

Disclosure: I have ended up torrenting far more DW than I would like, not only because of BBC America's stupid staggered schedule, but because Comcast OnDemand doesn't actually post the episodes when they say they are going to 90% of the time. Or if they do, I can only watch them on my laptop (whereas media streaming lets me watch downloaded stuff on our big, beautiful TV). It's like they don't want me to pay for it.

That's a good article, it sums up the reasons for downloading pretty well.
I've been torrenting Doctor Who as well. But I don't feel *too* bad about it, because it's on free-to-air in Australia and I'll probably buy quite a few DVDs (not the whole NuWho though). But it airs a week after it does in the UK, and it is really difficult to avoid spoilers for a whole week, especially when you earn your living online the way I do.
For a couple of years, one of the digital channels here was showing The Daily Show and The Colbert Report the day after they aired in the US. It was fantastic. If they can manage it 5 times a week, if I can download Who the day after it airs, why can't TV stations do the same?

After UK Channel 4 bought the Daily Show, dailyshow.com won't show clips to UK-based IPs, which is annoying because I used to go to their site and watch any interesting-looking stuff they put up. C4 put only full episodes online, and they cull them after a week, so I'm more or less given up on it now.

We pay over a hundred dollars a month for cable (including OnDemand). We even paid for a TV that streams media, including from several different online providers (Netflex, Youtube, Vudu--weirdly not Hulu, which is annoying). And often there's just no way to see the shows where I want them--my television--when I want them. I'm willing to pay a small fee or watch advertising, too. Vudu's model is interesting--more like an online video store where you can "rent" or "own" movies for a small fee. I really think it's time that networks get with it and start providing the content that people want--and that they start making it accessible, too.

Yeah, I'm happy to pay or watch ads if they're willing to provide episodes to me asap. What, my money isn't good enough for them?

I pay for netflix and hulu plus. Those 2 subscriptions completely assuage my guilt about torrenting everything else.
