Some of these are quite vicious... www.rottentomatoes.com/m/cars_2/Of course, i'm sure the vast piles of cash Disney will make off the toys and merch will help dull the pain a little.

Cars 1 was the first Pixar movie I got bored of halfway through and turned off the DVD (although admittedly I've never seen Bug's Life). I'm not surprised to find the sequel is worse.

I'm lukewarm on it, but it looks like this year's Pixar CG Advance is "photorealistic cities and lighting solutions for same," if I'm reading this SIGGRAPH program right. That's always worth watching, in terms of seeing what problem they solved this time around.
The one I need to see is Brave, though.

I've seen every other Pixar movie in the theater but I might skip this one. Annoying that they'd make a sequel to their worst movie but the (very) little ones will like it.

From this that sounds about right: www.guardian.co.uk/film/2011/jun/26/pixar-cars-2-drives-animation-to-new-heightsThe other thing I've heard is that it's entirely ray traced - not sure if the two line up.

Hmmm. I'm so on the fence about seeing this at the cinema. I usually love Pixar movies, although I had some quibbles about Up and Wall-E. But Cars is my least favourite, because cars and 1950s nostalgia aren't my thing. So I'm not all that keen.
On the other hand, my partner is a 3D animator, so it's a tradition that we go together to see new Pixar flicks as soon as possible. I don't think I'll dislike Cars 2 enough to put a gap in our viewing list.

Cars was meh. I have no desire to Cars 2 in the theatre or at home*.
*At home movies aka: dvd movies - movies that look decent but not good enough to pay through the nose to see them in the theatre.

To be fair, I'm not sure that the likes of Toy Story 2 or A Bugs Life can really said to be all that vastly superior to the first Cars.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with A Bug's Life as such, but there's nothing to make it stick in your memory either. I really like Toy Story 2 though, for the Buzz/Zarg storyline and for Jessie. Yeeeeeeehaaaaah! Oh, Jessie. You are the reason I once drunkenly berated a Pixar employee about the lack of female leads in their movies instead of asking for all the inside gossip. If a supporting character like Jessie (or Dory) can be so awesome, then how great would it be if they gave a female the same care and attention they give to their main characters?
The song for Jessie's previous owner really kills the flow though. Randy Newman can bite me.
