I enjoyed the hell out of this show. I knew it was going to be great as soon as it was announced. I picked up the books when I heard HBO was doing it. The whole crew just put together some epic TV and kept to the budget which is a good sign for getting the whole story. The ratings for the finale were the highest of the season at 3 million, which grew about 800,000 from the premiere. The magical elements tend to go on as they did in season 1, rare and a BFD when they go down. GRRM is not gonna turn everything in to Dragonlance just because he added the much foreshadowed dragons. On Sansa: The book makes clear (spoiled in case you don't want to know book 1 stuff if you are planning to read it) That she is not just about to push Joffrey off, she is going to tackle him off and go over too to make sure he dies. It's when you first really get a sense that she is as much of a Stark as the rest of them.

Well that was flat out awesome.
Though I guess I was pretty much as wrong as can be on the whole "There probably won't be much more than allusions to magic or dragons" thing.

Blame my thinking of them as mundane on the modern media obsession with zombies.
And people being able to do magic and stuff does seem like a different order of thing than "this setting has creepy zombies and 100 year winters".

I think your reaction is pretty typical, for the book or the show.

Well, we're not getting a Stormbringer movie anytime soon, so we might as well take our Melnibonéans and dragons where we can. And the basic down-to-earth feel of the show seems intact – this is not a world where you are going to fix your problems by running to a wizard.

Apparently walking through fire, however, is a good start. ( I keed, I keed.)

Yeah, but she has her own epic tragic crazy person thing going on.

Trust me, I DO NOT ENVY HER. In fact, one of the reasons I love the series is there isn't a single character I envy-although I do admit to crushing something fierce on Peter Dinklage. (He's only an inch shorter than me! Hooray!)

What I find interesting is more or less what Jeor Mormont (head of Night's Watch) says - there's all this squabbling about politics, and who slept with who, and who's got a grudge against who; yet in the North there is something seriously messed up going on, and in the East there is a woman with dragons on her way to fuck you all up. I love the politics while it's going, but Dany and Jon's stories are always in the back of my mind as an ominous warning about getting caught up in trivialities.
And this: is an excellent way to sum up the first season.
