I saw like an episode and a half of Lexx ever, and only in tiny bits and pieces over at a friend's house, and I remember being really intrigued but never making the effort to track it down at the time. That shit needs to land on Netflix Instant. Dude, it IS on netflix instant!

It's a small nit to pick, but the theme song was TERRIBLE. Worse, if I didn't hit mute quickly enough it would get stuck in my head. Utterly horrible. Though not *quite* as bad as Enterprise it's in the same ballpark. Oh, and for my money the best episodes were the ones where they were the least literal about the whole WESTERN IN SPACE thing. Really I'd be happy with it being more of a live action Cowboy Bebop than "HEY EVEYBODY, we are in the SPACE SOUTH today - time for SPACE SOUTHERN BELLES and SPACE KENTUCKY COLONELS". So, yes, that is my reason to dislike Firefly I'd give if I did in fact dislike it: It is not a live action version of Cowboy Bebop. Also: Bebop has some of the best opening credits and theme music EVER.

Basically put Lexx, Cowboy Bebop and Firefly in a blender and you'd get something close to my idea of spaceship show perfection - though it might just have an audience of me.

(We're working through The Prisoner at the moment, will be looking for something new and episodic to Netflix after that...) Science Channel is showing a Firefly marathon -- which I assume means "all of them" -- on July 4th. So I guess I'll fire up the DVR and give it a try.

Not only are they showing Firefly, but they air the episodes IN ORDER. Oh and the last time the Science Channel aired Firefly they had little segments about the "science" of Firefly as an added bonus!

What, like "how planets work"?

I didn't watch, but I'm guessing it was more about things like how did the hovercrafts work or perhaps even the solar paneling in The Heart of Gold episode. Basically using a popular show to teach people about real science.

I want to watch a new space show, so I guess I'll give Firefly a try, but the thing is I don't like Westerns-in-Space the same way I don't like Boats-in-Space. I also just don't really like Westerns in general.
I hear conflicting things about the science in Firefly. Is there some way I should start watching Firefly? I know with some shows it's OK or better for a starter to watch out of order (Like TNG, or the X-files) and some shows where it wouldn't work (Babylon 5 and such). I love Cowboy Bebop because it doesn't have to be watched in order but if you do it adds so much. I don't want to sit through a bad episode one. In fact, I useually skip the pilot/origen/introduction episode because it's often not so strong. Unless, of course, it is crucial to see the set-up to understand the rest of the episodes.
For an intro, I'm almost always ok with "Here's people on a spaceship! Let's go!"
Edited for spelling

What, like "how planets work"? Alliance propaganda! These planets clearly don't "work"! Join the Socialist Reavers Revolution!

fuq, I'm not hugely knowledgeable about science. But my understanding is that as far as accuracy goes Firefly doesn't have sound in space, and you shouldn't inquire further than that, especially if you know anything about planetary systems and galaxies. Scientific accuracy is not Whedon's point.
The 'real' pilot, Serenity, is pretty good in my opinion. I was introduced to the show by a friend who said we would just watch the pilot and if I didn't like that, I wouldn't like the rest of it so she'd never mention it again. I loved it - not only does it give a sense of who the major 'teams' are in this universe, it sets up several on-going character issues.
The 'fake' pilot which was apparently aired first on TV is called The Train Job. It's a perfectly nice episode. The best episodes (Out of Gas, Ariel, War Stories) rely on you knowing and caring about the characters for their tension, so I'm not sure they'd be great introductions to the show.

Building on what Harriet Vane said, it's important to watch the eps in order. For example, what happens between Wash and Mal in War Stories CAN stand alone, but it's far more powerful and compelling if you have watched how these characters deal with each other over several episodes. On Netflix, the eps stream in the INTENDED order. You can also get a list of episodes in the order they were to be shown here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Firefly_episodes .

That song was so awful I didn't make it all the way through the video. I will thank you never to remind me of it again.
