I've seen Serenity, but have yet to see Firefly. I wasn't expecting that much from Serenity but was surprised at how good it was - and it gets better with repeat viewings.
The opening scenes are very clever, the set pieces are engaging, the dialogue is brilliant and you get a sensible plot into the bargain.
So Firefly is on my list of series to view (although it's a long list!).

I love it, but I can see why other people might not. The Whedon dialogue is an acquired taste, and yeah, a no-aliens space story is pretty unusual. I don't mind it, but my formative years were spent quoting Red Dwarf ad nauseum, which had a similar "there's no justice, there's just us" vibe. I'd actually be really surprised if aliens showed up, I've kind of been trained into the idea of space as really, really big and really, really empty. Firefly almost feels too crowded for me

It seemed slightly underwhelming to me after watching the series. It almost seemed like when the ending to a series is rushed because the series got cancelled. I'm like you. The end of Serenity seemed to much like it was rushing to give fans enough of a resolution without giving every little things away. (Who were the men with the blue hands? What is on shepherd book's ident card?) I think my biggest problem was Inara suddenly seeming open to a romance with Mal, which way too pat for me. It also seems kinda...anti-Whedon. What I like about a lot of his work is how he works against the "happily every after" syndrome.

It's a small nit to pick, but the theme song was TERRIBLE. Worse, if I didn't hit mute quickly enough it would get stuck in my head.

I'm guessing all of you complaining about the theme song have never actually watched the Lexx.

If they only saw "The Train Job." Because I am a diehard Whedonite and even I was all, "well, other than kicking that dude, I'm not so much into this, it's kind of a sob story episode." I very nearly didn't come back the first time. Way to start out the show with a whimper, Fox.
I like it better than I used to, but it's still the least impressive episode to me.

I'm guessing all of you complaining about the theme song have never actually watched the Lexx. I've seen every episode. All bad theme songs pale in comparison to a Joss Whedon authored space-western song, IMO.

I always liked the music that played when the Lexx was heating up its furry testicles of doom, getting ready to fry a planet. Very blood-pumping.
Oh, um, I mean, something about Firefly. Y'all. I reckin'.

AoK can attest that I know the whole Brunnen-G battle song and regularly bust it out in the shower.
I miss Lexx. If any series is crying out for a big-budget reboot, it's... well, actually not Lexx. But it would be an awesome way to waste a lot of money. Although on rewatching, Mantrid is somehow way, way scarier now. If you catch my drift.

Oh it was great! It's one of those songs where you can just spontaneously make up really dirty lyrics. It's got a very dirtiable structure. Take me home, take my hand, fist me 'til I cannot stand. Etc.

There is nothing about Lexx that isn't incredibly awesome. 790 is my favorite robot head character of all time.
As for the theme song, I always sang YO WAY YO, HO CHIII MINNNNH because it always reminded me of Robin Williams singing something with Ho Chi Minh in it in Good Morning Vietnam. It's been so long since I've seen that movie that I'm probably misremembering that part, but now the Brunnen G will always be connected to the Viet Cong for me.

Man, I'm so glad other people have watched and appreciated the Lexx. Oh how I could use a 790 writing epic love poetry for me. I like Brunnen G, I was referring to the synthesized music that played over the intro/credits to most of season in 2 in which the Lexx narrated EVERY EPISODE the exposition from the first episode (you can find it here without the annoying voice over www.youtube.com/watch?v=znlMR6Q9J9w&feature=related). My main problem was it was VERY repetitive with little variation. I liked how it was used in the show (here and there for emphasis), but for an intro song every time? It got monotonous.

I saw like an episode and a half of Lexx ever, and only in tiny bits and pieces over at a friend's house, and I remember being really intrigued but never making the effort to track it down at the time.
That shit needs to land on Netflix Instant.
