Well, of the things I was expecting The Numbskulls wasn't one of them.

Enh. It had so many awesome and fun elements, and it just somehow didn't add up to what it could have been. Also, River's transformation from amoral sociopath was too easy.

Nice acting from Kingston and Smith esp, but . . . What was the point of having her able to regenerate at all? The Mels sequence, while cute, was an annoying bit of retconning with a show that's been so well planned, and it was obvious within seconds of her arrival that she was River. I enjoyed the River-centric bits--the kiss, the gift of the journal, but when I think about it the plot didn't really make any sense at all.

Heh, artw, I just made the same Numskulls reference over on MeFi. Moffat strikes me as the kind of kid that'd read The Beano. We'd already seen city-urchin-Melody regenerating earlier in the series -- I think that Mels made a "last time this happened" reference back to it just before she went whoosh. I found this one again rather disjointed and rushed, again too much of got-to-feed-the-story-arc. And a good title wasted. As charlie don't surf asked on MeFi: "What the hell ever happened to Hitler?" After the first five minutes of Third Reich, the rest of the episode could have been set anywhere.

There's a Mefi thread? That's going to end in tears.

It's doing OK so far; but then again we're only one episode into this run so the boundary for spoilers is pretty clear.
(Speaking of: are BBC America doing the "let's not show the new Doctor Who" thing again for the Labor Day weekend? I hope not.)
