Am I the only person who found Jack way, way less broody this episode than ever before, except maybe in a few of the Who episodes? I like less broody Jack.
I really enjoyed the episode, except for that amazingly ick-inducing part. I am unclear about the whole ERs are overcrowded issue -- if people are not dying, why do they all need to be in the ER for long? It looks like there are about 7000 deaths a day in the US, so we can't be getting hundreds of extra people in every ER within those first 2 days.
And I do not even slightly get why Jack is now the only actual mortal on earth. But the timing is great, filling in my Who-less summer.

I thought it ick-inducing part was the best bit! Aside from the usual niggles the episode was a return to form for RTD -- better than most of his Who output, imo -- and it was nice to see him write something nightmarish that he *actually knows is nightmarish*.

The ERs seemed to be in urban centers where there would be fairly busy even without Miracle Day. Plus, even though no one is dying, people are still in need of medical care so if you add the average amount of normal sick people, plus no beds being freed up by deaths, and you get a pretty backed up ER.
As for Jack. Whatever is making other people immortal is making him mortal. Essentially because he was immortal before, whatever is being used on the Earth has reversed his condition in the same way it reversed the condition of the average human.

Jack used to heal. Humans aren't healing, they're just not dying. I am not sure what is going on, but it cannot be as simple as reversal of mortality status.

My theory on this is that whoever reversed the polarity of this one took the giant awesome powers of total immortality used on one guy and flipped the switch: Jack's former immortality is what is powering everyone else's now.

Jack used to heal. Humans aren't healing, they're just not dying. I am not sure what is going on, but it cannot be as simple as reversal of mortality status. I'm not sure if that is true-Rex's condition improves. He's brought into the hospital barely conscious wearing an oxygen mask. He then falls unconscious-yet later he's able enough to leave the hospital and travel to Wales-full conscious and without much in the way of help. (Sure, he passes out at one point.) If he wasn't healing, he would have remained unconscious and unstable, but he's stable enough to crutch around something he couldn't have done when he was admitted. His recovery is actually exceptionally rapid. Still, if people AREN'T healing, all the more reason for the hospitals to be packed. Hospitals generally free up beds through deaths and discharges. If no one is dying OR getting better, hospitals will get backed up quickly. Generally when there are no free beds in a hospital, patients are kept in the ER until they more open up so this could explain the backed up ERs. (In reality, I think the packed ERs were just a visual device to communicate to the audience that this situation is QUICKLY becoming a serious problem.) Oh and jenfullmoon-I LOVE that theory.

The doctor said she fixed him, not that Rex healed himself, and that because he didn't die she had time to fix him. I mean, maybe people are self-healing, but they probably would have noticed that. People usually recover very quickly on tv, anyhow. Anyways, icky exploded guy didn't heal, even his head didn't reattach to his body.
I like your theory, jenfullmoon.
I wonder if Jack will get back to being immortal and the eventual Face of Boe, or if we're just pretending that plot never happened.

Davies said that the FoB might not happen at this point... or he's just messing with people. I'm assuming Rex is a goner once they fix this death problem thing? Maybe?

Anyways, icky exploded guy didn't heal, even his head didn't reattach to his body. I would imagine that any normal injury can heal, but exploded guy is too far gone. He can't unchar his muscles or regrow skin that was blown away. And there must be limits, even in a world without death. If they cremated him there'd be nothing left but ashes, and he'd have to be dead.

Or, like Jack, it takes A LONG TIME for someone to come back from that kind of injury. We'll probably get more insight into how this whole not dying thing works next ep (I hope, I hope). Honestly I can't wait (and I'm ready fora little Lauren Ambrose action too).
