So I've read the books, but haven't seen the HBO series. Question: how is the backstory (the civil war 14 years before) depicted in the series? Do the characters just refer to it briefly? In the novel, there's quite a few places where Martin describes the civil war. The crown prince Rhaegar, son of Mad King Aerys, abducts Lyanna Stark; when her brother Brandon (heir to Winterfell, betrothed to Catelyn) rides to King's Landing, Aerys has him killed, as well as his father. Robert, Eddard, Jon Arryn, and Hoster Tully rise in revolt. Robert kills Rhaegar at the Trident. Tywin Lannister sacks King's Landing. But by the time Eddard finds Lyanna (after he and his companions defeat three of the Kingsguard), she's already dying.

You get most of the story there explained in dialog, but there are no flashbacks or anything and it isn't a huge focus.
