File this one under rampant speculation:
If the series is based on the Wars of the Roses between the Yorks and Lancasters, I'm going to guess that Daenerys's role will be that of a Tudor who reunites the country--something like Elizabeth I.

It's possible considering that whole "Stallion Who Mounts the World" prophecy that was focused on her son, plus now she wields the tools that united the realm the first time.
Still, incest and madness run in quite strong in that family so, you know, there is also the possibility of her proving to be a good leader up to a point and then losing her mind only to be felled like Aerys.

Ooh, I like the idea of her as Elizabeth I. Although so far I haven't been able to see a clear one-to-one matching of characters to historical figures, it's more to do with the events and passions and betrayals.

For the most part that's how I see the series, but watching Joffrey all I could think was "He's totally Caligula."

Given that the Targaryens were inspired partly by the late Capetians (the subject of one of Martin's favorite series, Maurice Druon's "The Accursed Kings"), Daenerys might have a little Isabella of France in her.

Thanks for the reference to "The Accursed Kings", it looks like a fascinating series!
