A spoiler is a revealed plot element that "spoils" the dramatic or emotional impact of a work of fiction. We at metacooler believe that common sense and courtesy go a long way in mitigating tensions between wanting to discuss a show, movie, or video game, and wanting to be able to approach it "unspoiled." To that end, we ask that you abide by the following:
- On a thread or board for a specific season or episode of a TV series, please don't reveal plot elements that occur after that episode or season in question without hiding them beneath clearly marked spoiler text. Spoiler text is created by hitting the gasping smiley face ( ) in the message tag section and can be uncovered by clicking the bolded text:Jocasta is his mom!
- Be courteous about speculative discussion around a show; if speculation is based around casting information, or third-party materials about the show (ex: writer or cast interviews, books that the show is based on), it may be considered spoilericious by some and should be appropriately marked.
- When linking to external discussions or media, be sure to note if content might be spoilery.
- With recently released media (movies and video games), keep in mind that other posters might not have had a chance to yet enjoy that media, and are likely to appreciate courteous spoiler marking.
- If you'd like to discuss elements of older series without worrying about spoilers, feel free to begin a new thread with your request for spoiler-free discussion clearly dileneated in the subject header ("Question about season 2 of Buffy NO SPOILERS PLZ!!!"). If you encounter such a thread, please play along nicely and hide all spoilers behind spoiler text.
- Don't be a jerkface. In this, and in everything.
- Just a note for the particularly spoiler-averse: using the "View the 10 most recent posts of this forum" section under the "Forum Statistics" may expose you to unmarked spoilers. Reader beware! (However, utilizing the "new topics" button at the top of the page is safe.)
