I'm confused. Sometimes she relies on the Doctor to ferry her around time and space -- for example arranging for the TARDIS to snatch her out of space at the start of The Pandorica Opens. But plenty of other times she's calmly made her way to where she's needed (and back) without help.
In A Good Man Goes To War Rory (and by implication also the Doctor) come to pick her up and she sends them away. Yet later she arrives at Demon's Run on her own; and the Doctor tells her to take everyone home even as he's buggering off in the TARDIS leaving her to her own devices.
Captain Jack has a handy wrist thingy; does River also have a device of some sort -- if not a full-blown TARDIS? -- that gives her time/space agency?

She gets a vortex manipulator (handy wrist thingy!) from that fat blue guy in one of the season 5 episodes (The Pandorica Opens, I think?). I think that in the episodes that take place after that, from her perspective, she can get around by herself. Otherwise she . . . rides the Doctor.

Heh.
The vortex manipulator (ah thank you I had totally blanked on its name) from The Pandorica Opens gets wired into the Pandorica so that the Doctor can pilot it into the exploding TARDIS and reboot the universe.
But after that, who knows? I've always been a bit hazy about how that reboot actually worked -- the universe springs back into being based on Amy's memory of it? Maybe River gets a vortex manipulator this time around because Amy remembered her having one...
(I love The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang, but I suspect Moffat came up with the "something blue" line first and then worked back from that.)

After the universe reboots, the Doctor gives River a vortex manipulator at the same time that he gives her diary back. I half assumed he somehow recovered the one from the Pandorica, or got her a new one so she wouldn't be stranded in 2010 Leadworth forever. If he had time to change into a tuxedo, he probably had time to stop by Vortex Manipulators-R-Us.
